Capstone Project - "Habits of Mind: Creative Investigative Journaling in

Art Education"

This qualitative case study explored the creative investigative journal as used in the International Baccalaureate Program (IB). In this program, the journal was employed as an art workbook for investigation that promoted higher learning and served as a tangible form of assessment. My observations of the journaling procedures found that the journal, as a tool, formulated a process or “habits of mind” that in turn structured the journaling. In addition my findings found it was more about the process, not the product, and that journaling is a wonderful assessment tool as it is a tangible product in addition to the student’s art product.  I created a blog (http://creativeinvestigativejournal.blogspot.com) that transcribed notes from my classroom observations as well as created my own creative investigative journal that resulted in an online publication (ISSUU).
